History Of Fort Carson

Camp Carson was established in 1942 shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor during World War II. Camp Carson was named in honor of Kit Carson, the famous Army officer who was also known for organizing fur trapping expeditions to the Rocky Mountains during the mid 1800’s. Camp Carson received its designation as an Army Fort in 1954 and in 2007 the official motto of Fort Carson was coined “The Best Hometown in the Army”. Because of the beautiful scenery and agreeable climate, the Mountain Post is one of the most requested duty stations in the Army. Fort Carson is a census-designated place (CDP) in unincorporated El Paso County and the zip codes are 80902 and 80913.

Along with the Piñon Canyon Maneuver Site, a 235,000 site in Southeastern Colorado, Fort Carson is an ideal location for year-round training due to its high altitude, mild climate and the enormous amount of real estate available to accommodate live fire training and large-scale exercises. Some of the notable past soldiers of Fort Carson who have been recognized for high achievement include Martin Dempsey, Lionel Rivera, Dennis Reimer, Boyd Melson, Andrew Maynard, Bernard W. Rogers, Colin Powell, Wesley Clark and John William Vessey, Jr.
